Melih Bayram Dede’s new book “Remaining Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” is published

Journalist and Author Melih Bayram Dede’s third book, “Staying Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” has been published by Liz Yayınları. The book examines the impact of artificial intelligence and digital transformation on individuals, society, the workplace and global power dynamics, while focusing on how human values can be preserved in an era of rapid technological change.

Drawing on more than a quarter-century of experience following developments in technology, Melih Bayram Dede explores a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, large language models and autonomous systems. The book approaches technological developments not merely as technical innovations, but as forces that influence human behaviour, social relationships, working practices and patterns of thought.

Without overlooking the opportunities created by digital transformation, Dede argues for a critical and conscious approach to technology’s growing role in everyday life. In this context, the book focuses on the search for ways to preserve human originality, critical reasoning, emotional intelligence and core human values in the age of artificial intelligence.

From cyber crises to algorithmic transformation

“Staying Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” covers a wide range of topics related to the digital world. Social media manipulation, echo chambers, the disinformation industry and cybersecurity risks are among the issues examined in the book.

The book also addresses the changes artificial intelligence may bring to the labour market. It explores which professions could disappear as a result of technological transformation, which new areas of employment could emerge, and how people might adapt to a changing labour market.

The debate over a “citizenship income on the condition of not working,” which has emerged in discussions about the future of employment in an AI-driven economy, is also among the topics covered. In addition, the book examines the technology rivalry between the United States and China, the impact of artificial intelligence on global power dynamics, and the economic and geopolitical consequences of technological superiority.

Rather than adopting an exclusively optimistic or pessimistic view of technological progress, the book seeks to evaluate these developments from multiple perspectives and encourage a more informed and conscious approach to the changes taking place.

“A call to preserve our originality amid technology”

In the book’s foreword, Melih Bayram Dede reflects on his personal experience of technological transformation throughout his career in journalism and technology writing. Describing the technological turning points he has witnessed over the decades, Dede explains the central perspective behind the book:

“Throughout my more than quarter-century journey in journalism and technology writing, I have witnessed many turning points, from typesetting with metal type to the Macintosh computers that marked the early days of desktop publishing, from the crackling sounds of dial-up connections to fibre-optic internet, from valve radios to TikTok, and ultimately to the revolution of artificial intelligence.”

Dede emphasises that the one constant throughout the evolution of technology has been the human being, pointing out that technology ultimately reflects the intelligence, spirit and values of the people who develop and shape it.

He explains that the book is neither rooted in pessimism that rejects technology altogether nor in an unquestioning enthusiasm for technological innovation. Instead, he describes the work as a search for ways to benefit from the opportunities offered by digitalisation while preserving the qualities that make us human.

Who is Melih Bayram Dede?

Born in Gebze in 1970, Melih Bayram Dede began his journalism career in 1993. During his more than quarter-century career, he served as technology editor at Yeni Şafak, editor-in-chief of yenisafak.com.tr, and producer and presenter of the TechnoLogic programme broadcast on TVNET.

In 2001, Dede founded and managed Dergibi, a culture, arts and literature portal that was awarded the Electronic Publishing Award by the Turkish Writers’ Union.

For his work in technology journalism, Dede has received several awards, including the Economic Journalists Association Turkcell Special Award and the Telecommunications Association Technology Writer of the Year Award. He holds a permanent press card and is a member of the Informatics Media Association and the Kocaeli Journalists Association.

Dede continues his work in technology and automotive journalism under the TechnoLogic brand.

His first book, “Internet,” was published by İnsan Yayınları in 2004. His second book, “Technology and Life,” was published by Liz Yayınları in 2023.

With the publication of “Staying Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” Dede’s bibliography has reached three books.
