China is introducing a new automotive safety regulation that will require mechanically operable interior and exterior door handles in all passenger vehicles sold in the country starting 1 January 2027. Under the new standard, door handles that rely solely on electronic systems will no longer be permitted without a mechanical backup.
Scope of the new regulation
According to the draft technical standards, vehicle doors must be able to be opened manually in the event of a power failure, system malfunction or after a collision. In this context:
- Door handles that function only electronically, including flush or retractable designs, will be restricted.
- Electronic door handles may still be used, provided they are supported by a mechanical backup mechanism.
- Both interior and exterior door handles must remain fully operable without electrical power in emergency situations.
The regulation also defines technical requirements related to handle placement, accessibility and ease of identification to ensure quick and safe evacuation.
Safety concerns behind the decision
Regulatory authorities cite safety risks associated with electronic door handles, particularly in electric vehicles, as the primary reason for the move. In accidents or power loss scenarios, electronically controlled handles may fail to operate, increasing the risk of occupants being trapped inside the vehicle. The new requirements aim to eliminate this risk by ensuring reliable mechanical access at all times.
Impact on electric vehicle design
The regulation is expected to have a significant impact on automakers operating in the Chinese market. Flush and retractable door handles have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially in electric vehicles, due to their aerodynamic benefits and modern design appeal. However, the new rules are likely to force manufacturers to revise vehicle designs and engineering solutions to comply with the updated safety standards.
Transition period until 2027
With the regulation set to take effect in 2027, automakers have a transition period to adapt existing and upcoming models. All new passenger vehicles sold in China after this date will need to meet the new requirements. The industry is expected to focus on developing safety-oriented door handle systems that balance design, aerodynamics and mechanical reliability.
