OpenAI fills the void left by Anthropic: ChatGPT models at the service of the Department of War

Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s federal boycott of Anthropic, a seismic shift has occurred in the world of artificial intelligence. OpenAI has stepped into the military collaboration space that Anthropic rejected due to “ethical constraints,” utilizing its ChatGPT technology. CEO Sam Altman has announced a formal agreement to deploy the AI models powering ChatGPT within the classified networks of the U.S. Department of War (DoW).

The “woke” boycott of Anthropic and the six-month ultimatum

The crisis began when Anthropic refused to allow its AI model, Claude, to be used in autonomous weapons systems and lethal operations. Characterizing this stance as a “woke” approach, President Trump ordered all federal agencies to immediately cease using Anthropic’s technology. While agencies have been given a six-month period to transition to alternative systems—such as ChatGPT—or completely divest, Anthropic’s $200 million government contract has been terminated.

Sam Altman: “We are deploying ChatGPT models in classified networks”

Immediately following Anthropic’s ban from federal networks, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced they had reached a deal with the Department of War. Bringing ChatGPT’s capabilities to the front lines of military defense, Altman shared the following details in his official statement:

“Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network. In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome. AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.”

Technical safeguards and FDE support for ChatGPT

Altman emphasized that they would build specific technical safeguards to ensure ChatGPT models behave as intended in military standards, stating:

“We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs (Field Defense Engineers) to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only. We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements. We remain committed to serve all of humanity as best we can. The world is a complicated, messy, and sometimes dangerous place.”

The era of ChatGPT in the defense industry

This development effectively ends Anthropic’s presence in the defense sector while positioning OpenAI and ChatGPT technology at the heart of American military strategy. At a time when other tech giants like Google, Meta, and xAI are also at the table with similar terms, OpenAI’s entry into military networks under the condition of “human responsibility” marks a new era in the balance between AI ethics and national security.
