At an event held by US-based technology company Apple, the company’s first foldable smartphone model, iPhone Duo, and new generation hardware products became official.
Dual-display design and custom hinge mechanism
According to information shared at the launch, iPhone Duo provides a standard smartphone feel when closed thanks to its 5.5-inch outer screen, while transforming into a spacious 7.8-inch main display when opened.
The new magnetic hinge and flexible layer structure developed by the company significantly reduce the crease on foldable screens. A combination of titanium and aluminum alloy is preferred in the device’s chassis structure to increase durability.
Performance, biometric security, and camera infrastructure
The model targets the upper segment in performance with its A20 Pro processor built on a 2-nanometer manufacturing architecture and 12 GB RAM. Due to the slimness of the body, TrueDepth camera system could not be accommodated, so biometric security is provided via a side Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button. The rear of the device features two 48 MP cameras, while Apple Pencil support is complemented by multitasking capabilities at the operating system level.
Pricing and market positioning
Announced by the US-based manufacturer with a starting price tag of $1999, the foldable model will enter the market as of October. New chips supplied in partnership with Taiwan-based manufacturer TSMC and Apple’s in-house developed C2 modem infrastructure are also among the device’s internal components. In the market, the model will compete against foldable display devices from South Korea-based technology manufacturer Samsung.
