5G

Turkey has entered a new era in telecommunications by commercially launching 5G technology as of April 1, 2026. The transition, coordinated by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK), follows a series of strategic auctions and infrastructure trials. The deployment of this next-generation network aims to provide mobile internet speeds up to 10 times faster than 4.5G while significantly reducing latency for mission-critical applications.

Licensing and operator investment framework

Following the 5G spectrum auction held on October 16, 2025, major operators including the Turkey-based Turkcell and Türk Telekom, alongside UK-based Vodafone, secured frequency usage rights for a total license fee of 2.95 billion USD (excluding VAT). A total of 11 frequency packages were allocated to these service providers, with authorization valid until December 31, 2042. Starting April 30, 2029, operators will be required to pay 5% of their annual gross sales to the BTK as part of the regulatory framework.

Integration of local and national production

A key pillar of the 5G rollout is the requirement for domestic technology integration. According to the tender specifications, network infrastructure must consist of 60% locally manufactured products and 30% nationally developed communication systems. This strategy is designed to reduce external dependency in high-tech sectors and bolster the domestic industrial ecosystem. Initially, 5G services are being activated in major metropolitan areas and industrial zones, with a phased expansion planned to cover the entire country.

Impact on industry and digital transformation

Beyond consumer mobile speeds, 5G is expected to serve as a catalyst for the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Turkey. The technology’s ultra-low latency is essential for the advancement of autonomous vehicles, smart manufacturing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and remote healthcare services. Real-time data analysis on industrial production lines will accelerate digital transformation across various sectors. To access these services, users must possess 5G-compatible devices and subscribe to relevant data plans provided by their respective operators.
