Microsoft, the US-based technology giant, has announced a significant transition for its popular keyboard application, SwiftKey. According to an official statement, dedicated SwiftKey Accounts will be retired on 31 May 2026, as the service moves to a standardized Microsoft Account (MSA) sign-in system for all users.
Data migration to OneDrive
This update is part of a broader effort to streamline user experiences across Microsoft services. With the transition, typing data will be more securely stored in OneDrive. The company emphasizes that this move will profilde enhanced privacy protections and offer users easier access to their personalized data across multiple devices.
To encourage the transition, users who connect a Microsoft account can earn 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, which can be redeemed at online shops, for Xbox discounts, or donated to charity.
Changes for Google and Apple sign-ins
Users who already utilize a Microsoft Account to sign in to SwiftKey do not need to take further action, as their data will be automatically backed up to OneDrive. However, those currently signed in with third-party credentials, such as Google or Apple, will be required to link a Microsoft account to continue backing up their data.
Microsoft has warned that all existing SwiftKey Account data will be permanently deleted after the 31 May 2026 deadline. Users are encouraged to retrieve their account data before this date via the official data portal provided by the company.
Updated Privacy Policy
The company has updated its Privacy Policy to reflect these structural changes and provide greater transparency regarding data handling. Despite these backend shifts, SwiftKey continues to evolve on both Android and iOS platforms, introducing new features and improvements to maintain its position in the mobile interface market.
