AWS announces new edge location in Türkiye

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announces expansion in Türkiye by launching a new Amazon CloudFront edge location in İstanbul. Customers in Türkiye can expect up to 30% improvement in latency and performance, on average, for data delivered through the new edge location.

The new AWS edge location brings the full suite of benefits provided by Amazon CloudFront, a secure, highly distributed, and scalable content delivery network (CDN) that delivers static and dynamic content, APIs, and live and on-demand video with low latency and high performance.

All Amazon CloudFront edge locations are protected against infrastructure-level DDoS threats with AWS Shield that uses always-on network flow monitoring and in-line mitigation to minimize application latency and downtime.

You also have the ability to add additional layers of security for applications to protect them against common web exploits and bot attacks by enabling AWS Web Application Firewall (WAF).

What Is Edge Location In AWS?

An Edge Location in AWS refers to a strategically positioned data center designed to deliver services with the lowest latency possible. These locations are closer to end users than Regions or Availability Zones, often situated in major cities. Here are some key points about edge locations:

  • Purpose: Edge locations serve as frontends for services accessed by users. They are used by various AWS features to enhance performance and reduce response times.
  • Services Using Edge Locations:
    – CloudFront: A content delivery network (CDN) that caches content in edge locations, allowing faster delivery of static assets, website acceleration, and video streaming.
    – Route 53: A managed DNS service that resolves DNS queries from nearby edge locations, improving DNS resolution speed.
    – Web Application Firewall and AWS Shield: These services filter traffic at edge locations to block unwanted traffic as early as possible.

Benefits of AWS Edge Locations

  • Reduced Latency: Edge locations return fast responses directly to users. For example, CloudFront serves cached content from edge locations, minimizing latency.
  • Global Network Backbone: Some edge location services route traffic onto the AWS global network, which offers high bandwidth and reliability compared to the public internet.
  • Automatic Improvements: Amazon continually adds new edge locations, ensuring users are close to an edge location and experience low latency responses.

In summary, edge locations play a crucial role in optimizing performance for services like CloudFront and Route 53, making them an essential part of AWS’s infrastructure.
